Katonga Wildlife Reserve- Home of the Sitatunga Antelopes! -Uganda wildlife safaris

Have you seen Sitatunga antelopes?

Are you so interested in Uganda wildlife safaris? Safari Uganda to Katonga Wildlife Reserve situated in southwestern Uganda, along the banks of the Katonga River in Kyenjojo and Kamwenge districts and have a look at these shy Sitatunga antelopes. The reserve was named after the Katonga River which drains its water in Lake Victoria and Lake George. The Katonga Wildlife Reserve was established in 1998 and covers an area of about 211km2. Katonga Wildlife Reserve was historically used as a hunting ground for the King of Toro.

The vegetation in Katonga Wildlife Reserve is mixed savannah, with scrubland or woodland, riverine woodland, and riverine grassland. A large portion of the reserve is either permanent or seasonal a wetland with papyrus. Katonga Wildlife Reserve has variety of plants and animals that are unique to its wetland environment. The reserve is protected by the Uganda Wildlife Authority under the Kibale conservation area. Katonga Wildlife Reserve has several wildlife; over 40 mammal species that attract tourists for example Reedbucks, Waterbucks, Sitatungas, Colobus monkeys, otters, warthogs, elephants among others. Along the wildlife, there are over 150 species of birds that are good for bird lovers and the best way to explore these birds is by foot and by canoe.  

Getting there Katonga Wildlife Reserve is accessible while using public means of transport as well as the private transport means. The most used type of transport is road transport because it enables people see variety of what Uganda- the pearl of Africa has to offer.  

By road from Kampala; the capital city of Uganda, via the Kampala Mubende – Fort Portal road its about 276 km taking about a 4-5 drive. While using the Kampala Masaka road, it is 263 km taking about a 5 hours’ drive. Via the Mbarara – Katonga road, it takes about 183 km roughly 2 hours. While using the Ibanda Kamwenge road, it is about 103km taking you about 2 hours. From Kibale Forest National Park when using the Fort- Mpondwe road, it’s about 202km driving for about 4 hours From Kyegegwa, it’s about 42km south when following the signposts along the road.  

By air, charter flights and scheduled flights are arranged to Kasese airstrip by companies like Aero Link. After landing, a safari company picks the tourist and drives him/her to the Katonga Wildlife Reserve using the Fort Portal – Mpondwe road which is about 198km driving for about 4 hours.
