Using culture to boost tourism in Uganda.- Prime Uganda Safaris & Tours updates
Culture has greatly increased Uganda safaris in the
country due to the presence of diverse cultures in Uganda that can be explored
by the tourists who come for tour visits to Uganda. Therefore, with community
empowerment and aggressive marketing, cultural tourism will contribute
immensely to the growth of Uganda’s tourism sector.
In recent years, tourism has become a notable
contributor to Uganda’s economy in terms of foreign exchange and investment and
this has been attributed to the increasing safaris to Uganda. The sector’s fast
growth revealed in a report released, therefore, not surprising. Our challenge
as a country is to take full advantage of this growth and enhance it.
The 2012 study carried out by the Ministry of
Tourism in partnership with the World Bank and Department for International
Development indicates encouraging developments. The survey shows that while
Uganda attracted 946,000 tourists in 2010, the numbers increased to 1.1 million
in 2011 and 1.2 million last year. This increase has helped in developing the
tourism sector in Uganda.
Due to the increase in safaris, the study also
reveals key details: 32 per cent of foreign visitors and tourists came to
Uganda for business reasons, 11 per cent for conference, 17 per cent for
leisure, 20 per cent to visit friends and family, five per cent for spiritual/
religious purposes, and two per cent for cultural tourism.
Culture is an important element in Uganda’s tourism
and it has attracted many people to come for safaris in Uganda. This has been
added to gorilla trekking safaris which are carried out in Bwindi Impenetrable
National Park, Chimpanzee trekking safaris in Kibale National Park, game
viewing in many other National Parks, Boat cruises which are carried out on
Uganda’s water bodies and many other activities.
Efforts to market Uganda’s tourism potential is in
place. It is, however, crucial that more attention is given to our amazing
cultural variety through community tourism.
