mountain-gorilla-safaris-in-uganda-gorilla-trekking-safaris-in-ugandaBwindi Impenetrable National Park is the main destination for Uganda gorilla trekking safaris and tours because of its considerable habituated Mountain Gorilla groups.
It can be noted that a minimum of 400 Mountain Gorillas thrive in Bwindi Impenetrable National Park making it the single national park in the world with the highest number of these ape species that are listed as critically endangered on the red list of the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN). Because of this considerable Mountain Gorilla population, Bwindi has positioned itself as an epicenter of gorilla safaris in Uganda.
The first Mountain Gorilla group to ever been habituated for gorilla trekking in Uganda was in Bwindi Impenetrable National Park in the present day Buhoma region and it is none other than Mubare gorilla group that thrives up to today.  It is inspiring to hear that the park which started with habituating one Mountain Gorilla group in 1991 now has a range of twelve (12) fully habituated gorilla groups and more two are undergoing habituation.
These gorilla groups are distributed in four (4) regions namely; Buhoma to the north, Ruhija to the east, Rushaga to the south and Nkuringo to the South west.  Buhoma is the pioneer region and features three (3) habituated gorilla groups namely; Rushegura, Mubare and Habinyanja. Travellers interested in tracking the pioneer habituation groups can consider this region while planning their gorilla tours to Uganda Africa.
Ruhija also has three (3) habituated gorilla groups namely; Kyaguliro which was formerly a research group, Bitukura and Oruzogo. Rushaga to the south features the highest count of habituated Mountain Gorilla groups in Bwindi Impenetrable National Park. Five (5) groups including Nshongi – the largest group ever been habituated in Bwindi, Mishaya, Bweza, Busingye and Kahungye are explored in this region.  Two more gorilla groups namely; Bikingi and Bushaho are undergoing habituation in this region.
Nkuringo is home to one Mountain Gorilla group named Nkuringo and is famous of its challenging trek.
The distribution of these Mountain Gorilla groups determines the number of permits available in each region per day.  Only eight (8) people are allowed to track each gorilla group per day. The permits are bought directly from the Uganda Wildlife Authority Reservation Headquarters in Kampala or through an agent like Prime Uganda Safaris and Tours.
