Literally the Lucky Chimps Haven Ngamba Island chimpanzee sanctuary was established in 1998 to cater for orphaned chimpanzees that were luckily rescued from all over Uganda. Surrounded by the serene waters of Lake Victoria-the world’s largest tropical fresh water lake, In Uganda, Ngamba island is the largest known chimpanzee sanctuary always better explained by tourists on Uganda Safaris or Uganda tours. The island is 23km southeast of Entebbe in Lake Victoria 50 minutes by a speed boat off the mainland. The island is part of the archipelago of Koome islands on Lake Victoria in Mukono district and sits on 100acres of rain forest, 98 acres forested and separated from the tourist areas for chimps to roam through during the day. The island is an Eco-friendly project with compost toilets, rainwater collection, proper waste management practices and solar energy for electricity.

What to see and do at Ngamba Island Chimpanzee Sanctuary

The amazing human like chimpanzees definitely is what makes many tourists on Uganda wildlife safaris cruise on the waters to the Island. Humans share 98.7% of their DNA with chimpanzees which makes them our closest relatives followed by the bonobos and gorillas.The tranquil island is currently home to 49 chimpanzees 20 male and 29 females, 46 of them are rescued orphaned chimpanzees and 3 were luckily born on this island. Other activities that can be done in the sanctuary include cleaning cages, preparing food for the chimps, assisting in medical procedures, carrying out enrichment, typing chimp diaries, collecting observational data and anything that one’s skill gets them to. This stay is very educative, informative and much more. These activities are per-arranged with a safari company, one gets to do chimpanzee feeding on the visitor’s platform area where the chimps come close for easy viewing and photography. The chimps merge for feeding from the forest at 11:00am and 2:30pm with very playful lovely characters. Forest and water bird species

 The island has forest bird species that offers tourists on birding tours in Uganda with specie like the Spin winged Lapwings, Cormorant birds, Egrets, the singing black headed weaver, African Open Sullied storks, Egyptian Yellow Billed Dark, King Fisher, Fish Eagles. The water birds encountered include the swamp fly catcher, Malachite king fisher, long-tailed cormorant.  

Boat cruise on Lake Victoria

The boat cruise on Lake Victoria is so exciting as there a whole 50 or 90 minutes on the largest fresh water lake of Africa.
