Uganda is home to two Uganda gorilla safari destinations including Bwindi Impenetrable National Park and Mgahinga Gorilla National Park. Bwindi has over 18 habituated gorilla families that are well distributed in its four trekking regions; Rushaga, Buhoma, Ruhija, and Nkuringo while Mgahinga National Park has one gorilla trekking family called Nyakagezi.

The Nyakagezi gorilla family is the only fully habituated gorilla group in Mgahinga Gorilla National Park. The Nyakagezi gorilla family was named after a place in Mgahinga Gorilla National Park that has lot of food attractive to the gorillas. And because the gorillas are mainly found in this region, the gorlla family was named after the place. The Nyakagezi family is one of the easiest to track given the fact that it prefers a narrow home range for feeding, nesting, relaxing and recreation.

The group is composed of three silver backs, 2 adult females, 2 black backs and 2 infants. The family is led by Silverback Mark assisted by Mafia, Ndungutse and Bugingo. Rukundo is the sole Black back,Nshuti an adult female plus two babies namely Nshuti baby and Fred. Fred was named so in 2010 when a veterinary doctor, Fred, attached to Mountain Gorilla Veterinary Project worked hard to save it from a life-threatening wire snare.

The Nyakagezi gorilla group was once led by Silverback “Bugingo” for some period of time but amazingly, Mark is said to have succeeded over throw his leadership. Bugingo silverback is estimated to be 53 years and still thriving in the gorilla family something uncommonly seen in gorilla life. In normal occasions, any silverback gorilla that happens to be overthrown from the main group would resort to a lonely life or totally abandons the family like the case of Mubare gorilla group in the Buhoma North of Bwindi Impenetrable National Park.

Besides tracking the Nyakagezi group, tourists can engage in Uganda golden monkey trekking safari because this is the only Park in Uganda “where Silver meets Gold”, engage in the interesting Batwa cultural trail that takes you through the life of the “People of the Forest”, enjoy a Uganda birding safari and a mountain hiking safari to Mt Sabyinyo, Mt Muhavura and Mgahinga.

Mountain Gorilla Behavior,Diet,Threats and Predators
