How to get to Murchison Falls National Park by Road or Air-Uganda Safari News

How to get to Murchison Falls National Park by Road

Murchison Falls national park is 282km from Kampala- Uganda’s capital via Masindi -northwest of Kampala 4hours and 25minutes’ drive time on an all-weather tarmac road. The Nile river which creates the waterfall crosses the park from the east to west at a point known as Paraa, the heart of Murchison conservation area. The ferry crosses the Nile river at Paraa vehicle ferry point from south to the north or from the north to the south. Murchison Falls National Park is easily reached from both the southern and Northern sides of River Nile.  

Accessing Murchison Falls National Park for thrilling adventure safaris in Uganda through the southern side of the Nile river offers two main road options;


The first and fastest route from Kampala leading to Kichumbanyobo gate passes through Masindi town, kaniyo-pabidi forest to Paraa ferry crossing. Along this route, is Ziwa Rhino sanctuary-the only home to Rhino’s in the wild in Uganda 169km from Kampala. The Rhino’s can be tracked on foot within the sanctuary creating an amazing wildlife interaction after which one embarks to their safari.

The other route is longer but more scenic leading to the parks Bugungu gate. It passes through Lake Albert side through Budongo forest with great scenic encounters. The Budongo forest route provides magnificent views during Uganda tours since its overlooking Lake Albert from the direct position of the rift valley escarpment over Butiaba. Through the Northern side of the Nile River there’s one route that leads to three different gates; This route passes via Kampala-Karuma-Pakwach road branching off from Kampala-Gulu highway a few kilometers from Karuma bridge in the north eastern corner of the park. The different entry gates north of the Nile River include;
  • The nearest entrance gate is Chobe gate 2km north of Karuma bridge proximate to Karuma game reserve which acts as a buffer zone for Murchison Falls National Park.
  • Wankar gate is 10km off the Gulu main highway.
  • The Tangi gate is the furthest, 110km west of the Karuma bridge.
This route and gates are convenient for visitors traveling to or from Gulu town and those either continuing for or from enjoying wildlife tours in Uganda’s Kidepo Valley National Park. With all these routes, there’s no need to worry about how one gets to Murchison Falls National Park by road.

How to get to Murchison Falls National Park by Public transport

Traveling by public means especially buses is possible. Buses can be taken from Kampala bus parks within the city center. Most of these buses head to Gulu therefore one heading for unrivaled adventure safaris in Uganda’s Murchison Falls National Park gets out from Masindi town and then takes a private taxi to the national park. Public means is cheaper than hiring a private car from Kampala though not the perfect option for a tourist on a wildlife safari in Uganda since it's inconveniencing to stop for wildlife encounters at Ziwa Rhino Sanctuary.

How to get to Murchison Falls National Park using Self drive Car hire

Traveling to Murchison Falls National park by self-drive can be done if a traveler gets a 4x4 car for hire in Kampala.
