Facts about Moutain Rwenzori National Park - Uganda safari News

Mountain Rwenzori is a stiff rugged Mountain range that resulted from uplifting caused by tectonic movements. These tectonic movements were also responsible for the formation of the rift valley. The unique thing about Mountain Rwenzori is that it is the only mountain in East Africa that was not formed as a result of volcanicity.

Mountain Rwenzori, is also known as “Mountain of the Moon”. It got this designation “Mountain of the Moon” from an astronomer, mathematician and geographer; Ptolemy. This name is because the mountain is snow capped throught the year. Mountain Rwenzori is made up by 6 major peaks, with its uppermost peak known as Margherita.

Margherita peak is approximately 5,109 meters above sea level and it is the 3rd highest peak in Africa after Mountain Kilimanjaro (5,895meters) in Tanzania and Mountain Kenya (5,199meters) situated in Kenya. Other peaks include; Mountain Speke (4890meters), Mountain Baker (4843meters), Mountain Emin (4,798meters), Mountain Gessi (4,715meters) and Mountain Luigi di Savoia (4627meters). All these 6 peaks can be reached through a Uganda hiking safari via the central circuit trail or the Kilembe trail.

Mountain Rwenzori National Park
