KIBONGE: UGANDA’S OLDEST LION WILL BE HEAVILY MISSED – UGANDA SAFARI NEWS:

uganda tours imageLions are considered to be among the big five of the land animals along with elephants, leopard, Rhinos and buffaloes not necessarily because of their size but because they are dangerous to hunt and all these can be encountered on Uganda safaris.
Kibonge which is estimated to be the oldest lion in Uganda has thrived at Uganda Wildlife Education Centre (UWEC) which was formerly known as Entebbe zoo which is usually encountered on a safari in Uganda with great gathering of various wildlife species in Uganda. The lion is estimated to have aged 18 years exceeding the life expectancy of lions that is between 10 and 16 years. The famous Kibonge had lost his teeth and his coat had experienced extreme fading while the roaring part of it was far from being heard.
Kibonge later lost the capacity to eat while paving the way for the life in the other world which came true on Friday 28th /11/2014 at Midday when the UWEC PR Belinda Atim announced the demise of this Uganda safari tour product.
One would wonder about Kibonge’s past. Kibonge is a Kenyan born lion which was abandoned at Nairobi Park and grew in the hands of animal care givers until he made three years and then he was donated to Uganda Wildlife Education Centre (UWEC) in 1999. Upon his arrival, Kibonge gave company to the lioness Salaam which had lived there for long but after her departure, Kibonge was to stand a lonely life. In 2009, he was saved of loneliness when he got two lionesses donated by a zoo in London. In 2012, he was able to father four cubs though two of them passed away and those that remained i.e. Mutagamba and Flavia still exist and can be encountered while planning a safari to Uganda.
The lions in Uganda are projected not to be exceeding 300 and this population is thought to decline due to increased habitat loss, poisoning by animal keepers and trophy hunting. Apparently, Lions thrive in the National Parks of Kidepo, Queen Elizabeth and Murchison Falls thus can be encountered while on a safari tour in Uganda.
