In the year 1967, American naturalist Dian Fossey arrived in Volcanoes and hence the park became the base for her to carry out her Gorilla research and conservation activities. From that time the famous Fossey initiated Karisoke Research Center where she spent most of her time in the park working hard to save the gorillas from extinction by the local poachers who were seriously hunting the gorillas.
