The bigodi community tourism initiative wins silver at the 2015 african responsible tourism awards – Uganda safari news
Formally
referred to as Kibale Association for Rural and Environmental
Development (KAFRED), the Bigodi community is proud to have won silver
at the recent concluded African responsible tourism awards for 2015
acknowledging its efforts of standing with the values of responsible
tourism and positioning its self as a responsible Uganda safari destination.
Positioned on the margin of Kibale National Park about 27km from Fort portal town, Bigodi Community tourism initiative is a community run tourism initiative and the most success full in Uganda organizing wetland walks and birding encounters in the natural swamp that has thrived in the area for thousands of years back attracting a range of travelers on safaris in Uganda to pay it a visit.
In fact, the chimpanzee trekking safari to Kibale National Park is incomplete without an afternoon extension to Bigodi wetland for a wetland walk. The impressive swamp wild life species including the Sitatunga coupled with impressive birds like the great blue turaco, hornbills among others. The wetland is also encountered by travelers on gorilla trekking safari in Uganda with an extension to Kibale for chimpanzees.
The sanctuary has maintained the values of responsible tourism and it is not surprising to hear that it has got a silver award from the 2015African Responsible Tourism Awards in South Africa. The KAFRED takes the general management of Bigodi Wetland Sanctuary in the district of Kamwengye and it works with the values of sustainable tourism. The community is fully engaged and their products are equally brought to the market and are bought as souvenirs by travelers on safari in Uganda.
