UTB to utilize Lake Victoria for water transport after the MV Vanessa launch - Uganda Safari News

Following the recent launch of the MV Vanessa boat in Entebbe by the newly appointed Uganda Tourism Board (UTB) chief executive officer; Lilly Ajarova was done to boost the water transport tourism in Uganda as well as utilize Lake Victoria in terms of tourism. Uganda’s tourism is beyond the primate experience, because it is blessed with abundant natural and man-made resources including water bodies that the government should boost to grow the tourism sector.

Lake Victoria is Uganda’s largest fresh water body and the second largest fresh water lake in the world after Lake Superior in North America. This lake is shared among 3 East African countries; Uganda which has the biggest share, Kenya and Tanzania Lake Victoria is estimated to cover about 68,000 square kilometers with more than 84 islands scattered all over East Africa.

MV Vanessa, a luxury boat with capacity to sit 54 passengers, is seeking to tap into the current void in the water transport tourism potential in Uganda. Its movement to the different set destinations will mark the beginning of utilizing Lake Victoria and other water bodies for the benefit of Ugandans and the international community as well.

MV Vanessa is one of the safest, modern boats certified to cruise on Lake Victoria that was awarded a seaworthy certificate to transport people. It brings out the true meaning of “a safe boat cruise”. It has 54 seats with 54 lifejackets, an onboard toilet, AC, radar, sonar, and all the other bells and whistles you should expect from a boat built this year.

Mr Maxime Van Pee, the Nyanza Evergreen Waterways director, said the investment was informed by the tourism potential in water transport, saying the boat will start with scheduled routines on water frontiers in Jinja and Entebbe. MV Vanessa transports single travelers, group travelers, business people, families and many more. “We are starting with Jinja-Entebbe for now because we are still finishing documentation and we are waiting for another boat to arrive,” he said, adding they anticipate to broaden operations in future.

The boat costs USD45 (Ugshs 165,000) to Jinja while a return journey is charged USD85 (UgShs 315,000). The boat departs Waterfront Beach; Entebbe at 9 am and returns from Jinja at 2 pm on Monday, Friday and Sunday. Book your ticket to avoid traffic jam and bad drivers along the Jinja road!
