As far as natural beauty goes, I am yet to find a place in Rwanda that beats the loveliness of these twin lakes in Rwanda. They are referred to as the twin lakes because they are interconnected at a point where one lake pours water into the other. The secret behind this undefined magic of the twin lakses is how a lake flows into another lake. As it happens, Lake Burera is about 150 meters higher than Lake Ruhondo. These lovely breathtaking lakes are located at the base of Mt. Muhabura, Gahinga and Sabyinyo.

Putting the caves, the Kigali city, mountain climbing, Canopy walk, chimpanzee trekking safaris Rwanda, Rwanda gorilla trekking safari activities aside, Rwanda’s twin lakes; Lake Burera and Lake Ruhondo are a must see on your safari Rwanda.

In the middle of these two lakes, there are islands with inhabitants whose primary occupation is fishing. Visitors that are not interested in boat safaris along the lake can engage in Nature walks and bird watching in the hills surrounding the lakes.  

What to see while at the Twins lakes

The lakes offer tourists a beautiful view of landscape, wetland habitat, and water birds, Virunga volcanoes, local communities and attractions in the neighboring Uganda and the Democratic Republic of Congo.  How rewarding is the boat ride along the lakes?

Interestingly the two lakes have islands which can be visited by a boat. A stand at one of the islands is good for photography and sightseeing.

The canoe ride rewards travelers with a breath of fresh air, spectacular views of the green vegetation and can spot some little birds on some islands and along the shores of the lake.

The Lake Boat cruise gives travelers an opportunity to spot many water birds such as herons, kingfishers, cormorants, darters, hammerkops, stalks, cranes among the many. A pair of binoculars and a bird book is handy for bird lovers interested in Rwanda birding safaris.

Fortunately, these lakes are also free from dangerous water animals like crocodiles which assure travelers of their safety on the waters.

During the boat cruise, travelers also get a chance to interact with local people riding as they cross to their gardens situated on the islands or across the lake.

Mountain Gorilla Behavior,Diet,Threats and Predators
