Voted as one of the world’s seven Natural Wonders of Africa in 2013, the masterpiece of the Ngorongoro Conservation Area is the Ngorongoro crater. The Ngorongoro crater is the world's largest inactive, intact and unfilled volcanic caldera. Though inactive now, Ngorongoro volcano was active from about 2.45 to 2 million years ago still vibrant for Tanzania safaris till now. The crater in Ngorongoro was formed when a large volcano exploded and collapsed on itself two to three million years ago. The crater is 610 metres (2,000 feet) deep with its floor covering 260 square kilometers (100 square miles) rising 1,800m above sea level.

Before the collapse, the original height of the crater is estimated to have been ranging from 4,500 to 5,800 metres (14,800 to 19,000 feet) high. Ngorongoro Conservation Area where the crater is found is a protected area and World Heritage Site 180km west of Arusha. The crater derives its name from the Maasai pastoralists who derived it from the sound produced from the cowbell-ngoro ngoro. About 20kms across, 600 meters deep and 300 sq. kms in area, Ngorongoro Crater is the best and awe-inspiring crater where you can see wildlife on a wildlife safari in Tanzania.

Ngorongoro conservation area is situated in the Crater Highlands area of Tanzania between the Serengeti and Lake Manyara.
