The Uganda Wildlife Authority Director Successfully Sets Off The 6th Giraffe Translocation Exercise


Today, the Uganda Wildlife Authority Executive Director; Mr. Sam Mwandha set off the sixth giraffe translocation exercise. The translocation will move giraffes from Northern Bank of Murchison Falls National Park to Pian-upe Wildlife Reserve in Eastern Uganda. Mr. Sam Mwandha handed over the translocation flag to The coordinator Veterinary Service; Dr. Patrick Atimnedi marking off the sixth giraffe translocation Exercise. Uganda Wildlife Authority has exercised this to support the Giraffe Conservation Foundation headed by Dr. Julian. In attendance was the Uganda Wildlife Education Center (Entebbe Zoo) and Makerere University Veterinary School.

Murchison Falls National Park is Uganda’s largest and oldest Uganda safari park sitting in the northern end of the Albertine rift valley where the massive Bunyoro escarpment merges into an expansive palm-dotted savannah of Acholi land. Covers about 3,840sqkm (1,503sqmi), this geographical fraction offers a varied habitat for both Uganda wildlife tour animals and birdlife. The park is home to about 76 species of mammals, the residents of the park being the hippos and Uganda’s largest population of Nile crocodiles (along the Nile River banks). Pian Upe was gazetted as the Debasien animal sanctuary in the southern part in 1958 and was expanded northwards and renamed Pian Upe in 1964.

Animals seen there include; Leopards, Spotted Hyenas, Oribi, Hell’s Zebra, Buffalos, Eland, Bright’s gazelle, Harte beast, Greater Kudu, Topi, Dik-dik and Uganda’s last population of Roans Antelopes, Vervet monkeys, Pata monkey, Olive Baboons. These animals have attracted thousands of tourists to tour Uganda every year.

How to get to Pian Upe Wildlife Reserve Uganda

I advise tourists with enough time to use road transport during their tours Uganda becuayse their is a variety of scenery to see as they move to their safari destinations.  
By road, From Kampala (Uganda’s capital city) via Jinja- Pallisa- Kumi- Pian Upe is about 7-8 hours covering a distance of about 402km. From Kampala via Masindi- Apac- Pian Upe is about 8-9 hours covering a distance of about 500km. From Mbale via the Moroto road, is about 3-4 hours with a distance of about 212km. From Mbale using the Soroti road, it’s about 212km taking about 3-4 hours while its roughly 6hours from Kidepo Valley National Park Uganda.  

By air, flights can be arranged from Entebbe International Airport to Kidepo the nearest airstrip. These chartered flights are arranged by companies like Aerolink. Scheduled flights to Kidepo airstrip as per the Aerolink schedule are planned on Sundays, Wednesdays and Fridays. The flights normally take a duration of about 1-2 hours. The tourists are then driven to Pian Upe from Kidepo airstrip to Pian Upe for a distance of about 315km. this normally takes about 5-6 hours.
Besides Pian Upe wildlife reserve, there are other wildlife reserves within the same proximity including Bokora and Matheniko wildlife reserve.

A Brief about Bokora Wildlife Reserve

The north eastern region of Uganda is adorned with wildlife reserves and a national park richly hosting diverse wildlife. Bokora corridor wildlife reserve is titled by the ethnic group that finds home here-a Karamoja group known as Bakora. This unique conservation area was gazetted in 1964 and managed by Uganda Wildlife Authority.
Bokora corridor wildlife reserve is one of Uganda’s protected areas in North eastern Uganda. The reserve is part of the numerous wildlife reserves encountered on a Uganda safari to Karamoja region. This region spans from Kidepo valley national park through Matheniko and Bokora to Pian-Upe wildlife reserve (2,304km2)-the second largest protected area after Murchison Falls National park(3,893km2). The reserve sits in 2,056km2 (794sqmi) of dry savannah plains sprawling from Mount Kadam to Mount Napak on it’s northern side.

A Brief Matheniko Wildlife Reserve

Matheniko wildlife reserve is situated in northeastern Uganda, along the Uganda Kenya boarder in Moroto district. The Wildlife reserve positions on an altitude of about 1070 meters (3510ft) to 1830 meters (6000ft). Matheniko Wildlife reserve is found in the semi-arid area of the Karamoja region therefore it is characterized of a semi desert grassland and shrubland. Matheniko Wildlife Reserve has a size of about 1520km2 stretching from the spectacular Kidepo National Park.
Matheniko Wildlife reserve runs through Bokora to Pian Upe wildlife reserve which emanates second after Murchison Falls National Park Uganda. Matheniko generates a larger eco system of savanna and mountains in the semi-arid area for example birdlife specifically around the Loporokocho swamp terrains, having species that are hard to see anywhere such as the Tockus Jacksons Hornbill, White headed Buffalo weaver, Hartlaub’s bustard, and the Ostrich (Struthio camelus). These have attracted many tourists to Uganda safari tour.

ZIWA RHINO SANCTUARY RE-OPENS On 10 th June 2021, the government through Uganda Wildlife Authority (UWA) re-opened Ziwa Rhino Sanctuary to travelers on Uganda safaris after 50 days of closure.
