MALEWA; BAGISU’S HERITAGE CUISINE – UGANDA SAFARI NEWS:

uganda safari toursBeing a heterogeneous nation, Uganda is endowed with 65 tribes each with different cultural setting - something to marvel at while on safari in Uganda. Bagisu tribe is one of these tribes and it inhabits the slopes of Mount Elgon – another popular Uganda safari product.
The wonder today is about their traditional dish that was bestowed upon them by their fore fathers and cherished ancestors who dwelled on the slopes of locally re-known Mount Masaba for centuries and centuries ago. The Malewa is extracted from youthful, fresh and soft bamboo shoots. Bamboo is considered to be perennial grass and is a leading member of the grass family.
Unlike many tribes in Uganda who have lost much of their cultural attachment, in Bagisu a meal without malewa can never be considered a complete meal. It is thought that the Malewa cuisine will ultimately find its way to the national menu thus easily enjoyed by those undertaking safaris in Uganda.
The expansion of the Malewa delicacy to other parts of Uganda is no longer a dream as it is apparently available in supermarkets in cosmopolitan towns and cities like Kampala – some of which are favorite shopping centers for Uganda safari undertakers. Bamboo contains medicinal and nutritional properties which makes the Malewa delicacy to go beyond mere delicacy.
