Description of Natasha the Genius
Natasha is has a short, black coat, a black face with a wrinkled forehead. Natasha is one of the popular chimps in the sanctuary and the smartest female in the group. She is very friendly to the dominant male chimps. Natasha desires spending nights in the holding facility than nesting in the forest.Natasha was born in the wild and it is thought that she could have been orphaned after her mother was killed by pet traders. But she was rescued from two years of captivity and was among the very first chimps to be accommodated at Ngamba, a sanctuary that was gazetted in October 1998.
She is normally selected to take part in research which she willingly accepts however, after entering the testing room, she tends to change behaviour and becomes aggressive especially when she loses on the reward.
During the afternoon feedings, Natasha is often observed stamping on one of the trees near the feeding area. When she gets nervous, she then pretends to be busy and finds anything to distract her.
Unlike other chimps in the sanctuary, Natasha does not forgive and does not forget. She is famous for keeping anger for days until the right time when she carries out her revenge.
About the Newly Born
Natasha’s cycle has always continued even while on contraceptive implants. Natasha was found out to be pregnant early this year after conducting routine pregnancy tests on the female Chimpanzees. Chimpanzees pregnancy lasts for about 243 days; about 8 months.Following the birth of this New baby girl yet to be named, Natasha brings the number of chimpanzees in Ngamba Island to 50 and these include 20 males and 30 females.
