 Mgahinga National Park is a protected under the Virunga conservation area. The Virunga Conservation area covers a total area of about 434km2. Virunga conservation area consists of Volcanoes National Park Rwanda, Virunga National Park in Democratic Republic of Congo and Mgahinga Gorilla National Park Uganda. The Virunga conservation area is the only celebrated area in the world that hosts Uganda Rwanda Congo mountain gorilla trekking Safaris. Each of these countries affectionately protects its own portion of the Virungas. Given Uganda’s share of the Park, Mgahinga Gorilla National Park covers 8% of the Virunga conservation area with an area of about 33.7sq.km.

Mgahinga National Park outspreads between 2,227meters (7306ft) and 4,127meters (13540ft) above sea-level. Mgahinga National Park was declared a sanctuary in 1930 by the British administration and gazetted as a park in 1991 governed by the Uganda Wildlife Authority (UWA). UWA took over this park to protect the rare primate mountain gorillas and golden monkeys that inhabit the dense forest.
