Uganda is a blessed Africa safari destination for it is home to half of the world’s remaining gorillas; the most sought animal for travellers interested in Uganda safaris. Uganda is blessed with two mountain gorilla destinations; Bwindi Impenetrable National Park and Mgahinga Gorilla National Park. Gorillas live in groups also known as families. These usually consist of 6-7 individuals and sometimes a group/family can go up to even 35 members. Just like humans, there is always a leader that heads the family. This is usually a male Silver Back. A family usually consists of usually one leading male, accompanied by several females with their young.

How do gorillas spend their day?

A beautiful day in the life of a mountain gorilla always starts at sunrise. At around 6 am, they wake up and begin looking for food, an activity that covers a great part of the morning. Mountain gorillas spend 30% of their day travelling, 30% feeding, and 40% resting. In contrast to many primates in Uganda, mountain gorilla lives mainly on the ground. Mountain gorillas travel for about a kilometre per day within their home range of about 20 square kilometres.
Because gorillas are vegetarians, they feed on main plants however, they supplement their diet with fruits, ants and other insects. Their daily meal usually consists of roots, leaves, stems, the pith of herbs, vines and shrub, and some fruits. During certain months of the year, mountain gorillas also feed on bamboo shoots. Feeding is the most important activity of gorillas and a male adult can even eat up to 20 kg per day! Because the gorillas receive a large quantity of water from its diet, they rarely have to drink.

Mountain gorillas spend most of their afternoons resting and playing. This is considered as their last activity of the day and it is equally important in social life, especially for young gorillas, as it determines their integration into the group. During your gorilla safari Uganda, you will watch them hug each other, cuddle, bite, hit or wrestle till one is pulled down on the ground.
As the day ends, just before dusk, these mountain gorillas start constructing a nest where they will spend their night. Every gorilla sleep in its own nest, except for the infants who sleep next to their mothers. Nests are built on the ground or in trees and are carefully constructed by branches collected from bushes and other plants.

Who knew that gorillas are pretty musical?

Whistling and humming while you go about your daily business might seem like typical human behaviour, but according to a new study, gorillas also enjoy “singing” and “humming” when enjoying a tasty meal. Making vocal calls when eating food is a trait commonly seen in birds and mammals, however, after doing some deep research, just like other primates, researchers have noticed that gorillas have individual tastes of music unlike the chimpanzees that are pretty good drummers. This study was done in the Democratic Republic of Congo where researchers found out that gorillas in the produce certain vocalizations however, only when they are eating certain foods. The researchers call it “singing” or “humming. This activity is normally done by the silverbacks.
Wondering what gorilla humming sounds like? Safari Uganda for a Uganda gorilla trekking safari, trek and watch these majestic primates carry on their daily life that will include eating. This will probably give you a chance to enjoy listening to the gorillas’ harm.

Why gorillas do these sounds

These calls are usually not loud enough to be a called a dinner bell or food advertisement signal rather researchers say it is a form of collective decision-making in the feeding context that allows group members (gorilla) to coordinate their feeding activities.
Similar to the function of food-calls in chimpanzees, gorillas also call their group mates to let them know it is time to finish eating. Usually, it is the Silverback males that call more frequently since they are often the ones initiating changes in the group activity.
As for why males sing and hum more while eating, the researchers also noted that males, in general, tend to vocalize more frequently because they always point out that females and immatures are generally at a higher risk of predation indicating that they should behave more quietly.
A gorilla tour Uganda begins at 8 am with a briefing about the conduct of gorilla trekking in Uganda. After the briefing, you are led into the forest for your adventure under the guidance of rangers.
