The Royal Ascot Goat Races are certainly Uganda’s most popular social event that is flocked by many including travellers on Uganda safaris as well as those doing Kampala city tours around this time of the year. This exciting event will take place at Speke Resort Munyonyo in Kampala this Saturday. Gates to the Royal Ascot goats’ races event will open at 8 am where several goat fathers will model with their smartly dressed and branded goats with different names participating in each category and proceeding throughout the day.

History of the Royal Ascot Goat Race

When we dig back down to the roots of this colourful event, the Royal Ascot Goat Race in Kampala Uganda began in 1993. Once upon a time, the Entebbe Sailing Club considered fund-raising ideas until they came up with the goats’ race. This race idea was adopted and started out on the grounds of the Kampala Rugby Club with 400 people in attendance. By 1998, the race had outgrown this facility and was moved to Speke Resort Munyonyo, in 1999 and earned ten (10) million Uganda shillings. In 2005, the goats’ race attracted over 7,000 people.
Along with size, the goat race also grew in scale. It quickly evolved into a whole day event modelled on the Royal Ascot horse races in Ascot England and a total purse of more than 30 million UGX is awarded to the winning goat’s owners.

Who benefits from the goat race?

The Royal Goat race event is ultimately the fun show for everyone in Uganda including tourists undertaking tours in Uganda. The funds collected from this raceway are given back to the needy under Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR). Profits collected from this go to a charity selected by Ruparelia Foundation executive committee.

Goat races

There are 8 races in total and each goat’s race consists of 10 goats. The first, second and third place winners receive cash. The goats are dressed in the race labels with numbers inscribed on them. This race is fun! Imagine a goat running to win! It gets hard to believe that the goat owners actually bet loads of money on which goat is going to win the race. Spectators can also bet on goats through a preliminary parade around the track and abettors’ guide that describes each goat, spectators can gauge possible winners.
A goat race sponsor entitles one to name of the race, branding around the track and on event screens, prize giveaways, and tickers to enter the owner’s tent and free entrance to the event. You can also buy a goat to participate in any one or all the races. Each goat prize is determined by the price of the race you can name your goat, and entitled to tickets to the owner’s tent.
