Akagera’s conservation journey.
Conservation in Akagera began in 1934 when over 2500sqkm of land were gazetted as game reserve and this was basically about 10% of Rwanda’s total land area but in 1997 due to population increase, almost half of this conservation area was degazatted to bring the park to its current size of 1122sqkm of land as of today.  Akagera national park during its early days used to be the largest habitat for wild dogs and as a matter of fact, the Belgian colonial government considered these dogs a pest. Unfortunately, these dogs were attacked by an epidemic which saw the entire colony of wild dogs disappear from Akagera Park with the last dogs in Akagera being seen in 1984.  In 2009, Rwanda development board entered a 20-year agreement with African parks network which gave birth to the Akagera Management Company in 2010 which has taken great strides to conserve the wide range biodiversity within this park by investing over 10million dollars in conservation efforts for example construction of a fence of about 120km or 74.6mi on the western boundary of the park in a period of about 5 years. This company has also overseen the restocking of this Rwanda marshland park with wild animals donated from other conservation areas around the planet for example in 2015, 7 lions were brought to Akagera from south Africa’s conservations areas i.e. Phinda Private game reserve, Tembe Elephant Park in KwaZulu Natal. Recently in 2019, 5 rhinos were brought to Akagera from various conservation areas and zones in Europe to further increase Akagera’s rhino population.

Mountain Gorilla Behavior,Diet,Threats and Predators
