The lake snakes along the enormous Kigezi highlands covering 24 kilometres with a width of 7 kilometres. It is dotted by 29 green islands some of them include Akampene, Bushara, Kyahungye, Bwama and Njuyeera and the Bucuranuka Island. These islands have greatly attracted tourists who come for tour visits to Uganda.
The term Bunyonyi means "many little birds", which comes about because of the several bird species that Lake Bunyonyi attracts including herons, weaver birds, and the grey crowned cranes. The temperatures are quite moderate, and it gets really cool in the morning as mist engulfs the Kigezi highlands. The quietness, serenity and cool atmosphere plus breathtaking sights of the highly terraced hills and the beauty of the lake are quite magical to experience. Birding as an activity had generally attracted many birding safaris to Lake Bunyonyi.
The lake is a perfect place to relax and unwind after the strenuous Gorilla escapades in Bwindi Impenetrable National Park. There are popular beliefs that Lake Bunyonyi is totally Bilharzia free hence safe for swimming.
There are adventure opportunities while at Lake Bunyonyi including canoe rides to explore the lake, nature walks, visits to the local communities especially the Batwa (Pygmy), hike the Kigezi hills, bird watching and community walks, spot fishing, kayaking and boat cruises . Quality lodging and camping is available close to the lake and on some of the islands. The Lake has greatly attracted many safaris to Uganda hence promoting tourism.
