Is coronavirus in Uganda?

As an Africa tour operator, Is the coronavirus in Uganda? Is coronavirus in Entebbe-Uganda Yet? Are some of the questions that have been frequently asked by tourists/ travelers intending to visit Uganda with us.
There are no confirmed cases of Coronavirus in Uganda. People that had been quarantined for further investigations tested negative. This shows that Uganda is still safe from the virus.

What is a Coronavirus Quarantine?

The term “quarantine” has been used by many people over the last few weeks, but I have realized that many don’t understand it.  A clinical professor of epidemiology at NYU School of Global Public Health and expert in disaster preparedness say it is not really quarantined but rather self-isolation. In other words, it simply means staying home or staying away from other people.
According to the medical experts, if you are mildly ill with this virus, self-isolation helps you save other people’s lives.  You should restrict yourself from activities outside your home, except for getting medical care. Do not go to work, school, or public areas. If you’re going to the hospital, don’t use public transportation, share a ride, or taxis.
It is recommended that you be kept as isolated from the rest of the household as much as possible. “If someone’s sick in your house, you should try to keep them isolated like you would if they had the flu,” says Callaway. “Don’t share a bathroom, don’t share towels, clean up any surface that they’ve been touching with medicated products.”

What is Coronavirus?

Coronavirus is one of the viruses which may cause infections in humans and animals. Coronaviruses (CoV) are a large family of viruses that cause illness ranging from the common cold to more severe diseases such as Middle East Respiratory Syndrome (MERS-CoV) and Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome (SARS-CoV). Coronaviruses are zoonotic, meaning they are transmitted between animals and people.

The Origin of Coronavirus?

Detailed investigations by medical experts found out that (SARS-CoV) was transmitted from civet cats to humans and MERS-CoV from dromedary camels (Arabian camels) to humans. There are many coronaviruses circulating in animals but have not yet infected humans.

Which Corona virus is Affecting People Today?

The most recent coronavirus details that have been discovered or affected humans of late causes coronavirus disease COVID-19. COVID-19 is still affecting most people in China with a few outbreaks in other countries.

What are the signs of Coronavirus?

The most noticeable symptoms of the coronavirus infection include;-
  • Respiratory symptoms
  • Cough
  • Fever &
  • Breathing difficulties
It all starts with a fever, followed by a dry cough. After a certain period of time, about a week, the victim gets breathing difficulties (shortness of breath). When you get these symptoms, you may be required to visit the hospital for treatment.
However, when you have these symptoms, it does not necessarily mean you have the illness that’s why you need to go for a medical checkup. These coronavirus symptoms are similar to other common viruses more so colds and flu.

When Do You see the Signs of the Corona virus?

The incubation period between the day of infection and showing any symptoms is quite long. According to the World Health Organization (WHO), it may last up to 14 days (2 weeks) but some researchers say it may even go be up to 24 days which is close to a month.

How does the Coronavirus Epidemic Spread?

It is not yet known exactly how coronavirus spreads from person to person. However, it is believed to be airborne. Why? It’s because similar viruses have always spread via droplets, especially those produced when an infected person coughs or sneezes.

Who is More Prone to this Virus?

From previous experience with other coronaviruses, other categories of people at most risks of serious infection are:
  • People with compromised immune systems (e.g. cancer)
  • Elderly people
  • Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people
  • People with diagnosed chronic medical conditions (e.g. asthma, diabetes, heart disease)
  • Very young children and babies
  • Pregnant women
  • People in group residential settings
  • People in detention facilities
As of today, the risk to children and babies, and the role children play in the transmission of COVID-19, is not clear. However, there has so far been a low rate of confirmed COVID-19 cases among children relative to the broader population.

Avoid touching eyes, nose and mouth (face)

If you touch your face when your hands are not clean, you can easily contaminate it if you have contacted the virus.
Why? We use our hands to touch many surfaces and some of them may have been infected with the virus. Once contaminated, hands can transfer the virus to your eyes, nose or mouth. From there, the virus can enter your body and can make you sick.
