Rwenzori Mountain Climbing Adventure Safari - Uganda Safari News
Rwenzori Mountain climbing is one of the activities a traveler can take on their Adventure Vacations in Uganda. Trekking these mystic Mountains of the moon is a
truly fantastic and unique Uganda Safari experience, the wonder of the high glaciers,
the beauty of the valley of nine lakes, the bearded lichen hanging from
giant heathers with a backdrop of rocky cliffs, crags and snow capped
peaks
The Uganda Mountain Hiking Safari to Rwenzori has different trails, and the number of days taken to hike these mountains greatly depends on the trail used.
The central circuit trail of the
Rwenzori is considered to be the main hiking activity that people assume on their Uganda Safari tour to the
mountain ranges. The Safari tour will last 7 days and 6 nights, starting from the
headquarters of the Rwenzori mountains national park at Nyakalengija. This
trail also follows a circular path around Mount Baker that spends a night in
five different huts and also reaches a maximum altitude of 5109m at the Margherita
hut. The 7-day tour will go as follows:
slide areas and also needs
climbing over the rocks and bluffs before arriving the Mahoma River.
Immediately
after crossing the river, you will have a very steep
hike through an open fern slopes and the podocarpus forest up to the Nyabitaba hut at 87000 ft. – 2 652m taking
4 to 5 hours.
From Nyabitaba Hut to John
Matte Hut, the trail will lead westwards
for 1.5km and then continue
north steeply to Kurt Shafer Bridge, crossing below
the confluence of the Bujuku and the Mubuku Rivers.
Visitors will arrive at the poor condition hut at
Nyamileju and it’s also accompanied by rock shelter, walking on to John Matte hut at 3414m which is new,
comfortable, and large though it’s muddy around the site, also
taking an estimated 4 to 5 hours.
From John Matte at 3,44m to
Bujuku Hut, visitors will leave John Matte and cross the Bujuku River, then
enter the lower Bigo gogs. This trail is also muddy and follows the
left edge of the lower Bigo hut and its shelter.
Most visitors have lunch at the upper edge of Bigo
near Bujuku Lake and here there is a rock shelter called Cooking pot and the
shorter distance to Bujuku hut at 3,962m.
From Bujuku Hut to Elena Hut,
the trail then leaves west from Bujuku hut to Scott Elliot at 4372 m after a right-hand
branch that would lead to Elena hut at 4,372m.
From Elana Hut to Guy Yeomen
Hut, the visitors then can take a further climb from the Kitandara Lake at
4,292m and fresh field pass. The fresh field is a long flat navigate through
the fantastic high alpine mossy glades until half an hour and the trails begin
the circuit’s two-day climb. The rock shelter at Bujongola and Babamba are also optional at night but is best
to extend through the seeming endless mud to the newly constructed Guy Yeomen
Hut, now at 3,261m.
From Guy yeomen hut to Nyabitaba hut, the trail begins very
early in the morning in case the visitor has decided to go to the park
headquarters as they complete the trek. The trail matches twice and crosses the
Mubuku River in deep mud until the last few kilometers of good dry trail that
follow the ridge down to the Nyabitabe
that completes the whole circuit.
From Nyabitaba hut (25000m)
to Kasese town, there is a slope to Nyakalengija, near the park headquarters,
where the visitor will also meet their driver, if they came with one, to drive
back to Kasese town to their hotel.
The circuit prices are US$780 for an adult Non-Resident, US$705 for a resident and East
African citizen and US$400 for a Ugandan citizen. An extra day on the mountain
will be charged US$120, an additional hike to another peak will also be charged
an additional US$150 and if food is provided, extra US$120 will also be charged
per person. Filming will be charged US$200 per day and a refundable US$1000
will be availed if a copy is provided to the Uganda Wildlife Authority. Its advisable to make the necessary payments in time for better planning, and possibly, use a Uganda Tour operator forexample Prime Uganda Safaris.
Other travelers prefer the recently reopened Kilembe Trail, that ascends the southern
slopes of the Rwenzori from a trailhead at Kilembe near the town of Kasese. The
route along the lovely Nyamwamba Valley passes glacial lakes and some stunning
viewpoints before joining the Central Circuit at Lake Kitandara. The standard
route scales Mount Baker though the scenery makes shorter treks rewarding
enough, thus making Uganda Safaris Uniquely rewarding too.
